Tolar Kitchen

The Tolar Cabin or Kitchen is currently on display at the Heritage Village Museum on HWY 190, approximately 1 mile west of Woodville.

The cabin was built in 1866 in Hillister, Texas (8 miles south of Woodville) by Robert Jackson Tolar for his bride, Mary Versailles "Versie" Durham.  The squared-and-notched log structure is a good example of an early log cabin.  Square logs were considered a step above round logs.  The chimney is authentic "mudcat" construction.  The bedroom was built much later.  Note the wooden water bucket, gourd dipper, and wash basin on the porch.  One washed before going inside.
